Identity
How user accounts, administrator access, sign-ins and permissions are protected.
Do you know your Microsoft Secure Score and know what it's telling you?
Does your Microsoft Secure Score show the full picture?
Or only the small part of Microsoft 365 that has been turned on?
But that does not mean its security capabilities have been properly implemented.
Warning signs include:
Netcare assesses your Microsoft Secure Score, identifies whether you are receiving the security value included in Microsoft 365 Business Premium, and creates a prioritised plan to improve your security without unnecessarily obstructing productivity.
Microsoft 365 Business Premium provides a strong foundation for identity, device, email, endpoint and information security.
But these capabilities still need to be activated, configured, tested and maintained.
Microsoft advises organisations to review and configure their Microsoft 365 security settings after the initial setup.
When Netcare takes on a new client, we sometimes find that important Business Premium security capabilities have been:
The result can be a business paying for Microsoft security features it is not using - while also paying for separate products that increase cost and complexity.
Third-party security products can be valuable when they meet a genuine requirement.
The question is whether they were deliberately selected - or introduced because the Microsoft capabilities you already owned were never properly implemented.
Microsoft Secure Score is a tool designed to help organisations assess the security of their Microsoft 365 environment.
It provides a score reflecting your security posture and recommends actions that may improve it. A higher score generally means more of Microsoft’s recommended security actions have been addressed.
Secure Score helps organisations:
Microsoft displays your score as both a percentage and the points achieved out of the total available points.

Microsoft organises Secure Score recommendations into four areas.
Assess your security posture with Microsoft Secure Score
How user accounts, administrator access, sign-ins and permissions are protected.
How computers and other devices accessing your business information are managed and secured.
How email, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive and connected applications are protected.
How sensitive information is identified, accessed, shared and protected.
A meaningful Secure Score assessment should consider all four areas.
If one or more areas are missing or underrepresented, the headline percentage may not reflect your complete Microsoft 365 security environment.
Consider these two Secure Scores:
Secure Score | Percentage |
890 points out of approximately 990 | Approximately 90% |
400 points out of approximately 420 | Approximately 95% |
The second percentage looks better.
But Netcare would consider the first result significantly stronger.
A Small Denominator Is a Red Flag
If your organisation pays for Microsoft 365 Business Premium, a small number of available points may mean important security capabilities, devices or services have not been properly activated.
You may be:
A high percentage against a small denominator is not a strong Secure Score.
It is an incomplete picture.
Microsoft provides current-licence and achievable-score views in addition to the headline percentage.

Netcare reviews:
The Percentage Shows Your Progress.
The Denominator Shows Whether the Right Tools Are Working.
There is no official Microsoft pass mark that suits every organisation.
For organisations using Microsoft 365 Business Premium, Netcare applies the following guidance:
Secure Score | Netcare Guidance |
Below 50% | 🚩 Red flag |
50% - 69% | ⚠️ Needs attention |
70% - 79% | 🆗 Acceptable pass mark |
80% - 89% | 💚 Sweet spot |
90% and above | ❓ Review the balance between security and productivity |
These are Netcare guidance bands - not official Microsoft pass marks.
They only become meaningful after confirming that:
A high percentage with a small denominator does not pass Netcare’s test.
A higher Secure Score is generally positive.
But the objective is not to collect every available point.
Some recommendations can add complexity or restrict everyday work without delivering enough additional risk reduction.
Microsoft advises organisations to balance security with usability because not every recommendation will suit every environment.
The right Secure Score is the highest practical score that protects the business without unnecessarily obstructing its people.
This supports Netcare’s wider objective of helping organisations become:
More Productive AND More Secure
Netcare evaluates the business value and operational effect of each recommendation - not simply whether it increases the score.
The Microsoft Secure Score Assessment helps your leadership team answer five important questions:
The result is clearer than a technical report or a list of Microsoft recommendations.
You receive a prioritised plan linking security improvements to business risk, productivity, cost and operational impact.
Review of your:
Assessment of coverage across:
Identify security capabilities included in your licensing that have not been fully deployed or configured.
Identify security products that may:
Separate high-value security improvements from lower-priority recommendations and controls that may create excessive user friction.
Consider how proposed changes may affect:
Provide a prioritised plan explaining:
We review your percentage, points, denominator, Microsoft licences and four Secure Score components.
We identify undeployed capabilities, important risks, incomplete coverage and unnecessary duplication.
You receive a practical plan showing what to address now, what to plan for later and what should be separately scoped.
At the end of the engagement, you receive a Microsoft Secure Score Assessment and Improvement Roadmap covering:
Implementation and remediation are quoted separately after the assessment.
This lets you understand the findings and priorities before committing to further changes, licences or products.
Microsoft Secure Score Consulting is suitable for organisations that:
The Microsoft Secure Score Assessment and Improvement Roadmap is delivered as a fixed-fee engagement based on the number of identities in your Microsoft 365 tenant.
Microsoft 365 Tenant Size | Typical Investment |
Fewer than 20 identities | $1,950 + GST |
20 - 50 identities | $2,950 + GST |
51 or more identities | From $4,950 + GST |
An identity may include:
The final fixed price may also depend on:
Pricing assumes one Microsoft 365 tenant and reasonable administrative access to the required Microsoft security portals.
Netcare confirms the fixed price before the engagement begins.
Implementation, remediation, licence changes, additional software and major technical projects are quoted separately.
A percentage alone will not protect your organisation.
The value comes from understanding:
Netcare turns Microsoft Secure Score into a clear, prioritised improvement roadmap.
So you can receive more value from the Microsoft technology you already own, reduce unnecessary cost and complexity, and move forward with confidence that your organisation is becoming More Productive AND More Secure.
